THE HOUSTON SPCA WELCOMES 26 VOICELESS VICTIMS LEFT HOMELESS FROM THE GULF OIL SPILL

The devastation of the Gulf Oil Spill has caused many families in Louisiana to sadly relinquish their pets to coastal parish shelters because they just cannot afford to care for them any longer. During this time of need, the Louisiana SPCA and the Houston SPCA have teamed up to help these voiceless victims find forever homes. On Friday, July 23rd, the Louisiana SPCA will transport 26 dogs to the Houston SPCA where they will be evaluated for adoption. Over the next month, the Houston SPCA has agreed to take a total of 90 dogs from the overflowing parishes. The first group of dogs to arrive on Friday will mainly be from St. Bernard and Orleans Parish.

Many animal shelters across the nation are seeing a trend in owner surrenders due to the struggling economy, however, according to Ana Zorrilla, CEO of the Louisiana SPCA, “The coastal parish animal shelters have experienced 2-3 times the number of pets being relinquished than last summer.” The Houston SPCA assisted the Louisiana SPCA through many other disasters to include Hurricanes Katrina and Ike and is proud to offer assistance to the Louisiana SPCA during this emergency.

If you are interested in adopting one of these dogs, please closely monitor our website at www.houstonspca.org. As the dogs become available for adoption, their pictures will be posted “live” online on our adoption page.
